Aquatic Exercises with a Towel

Thursday, December 18 2025

Ready to try something different in your classes, small-group sessions or personal training? Try using a towel for drag resistance. Join Mushi Harush for Towel Power, a 25-minute aquatic fitness instructor video that demonstrates a variety of exercises that can be done with a simple exercise towel, including movements for muscle conditioning, cardio, stretching and more.

As learned in your aquatic fitness certification, drag resistance is caused by moving an object through the water’s viscosity or thickness. This can include total body movement, limb movement, or the use of specialized equipment. Drag equipment, such as webbed gloves or the Hydrorevolution upper and lower body trainers increase the surface area of the limbs and create more overall resistance. A towel can be used as an inexpensive form of drag equipment.

As Mushi demonstrates in the video, a towel can be folded, rolled, wrapped or used open and held with one or two hands for upper body resistance and cardio endurance. For lower body muscle conditioning, the towel can be wrapped around the ankle. The towel can also serve as a stretch cord for flexibility training.
