Color Themed Aqua Class

Springtime, Easter, or any time of the year, this color-themed cardio class delivers 45 minutes of intense but fun water aerobic exercise. Six colors are assigned to six base moves (jogs, kicks, skis, jacks, tucks & jumps). Different challenges are assigned to each of the colors, and then they are mixed and matched for some creative exercise combos. This aquatic fitness class can be taught in both deep and shallow water and requires no equipment.

Class Inspiration
Short on my video stockpile and with no one filming this month, the pressure was on me to quickly come up with new content. With Easter around the corner, I thought maybe I could brainstorm some themed content. I ordered some plastic Easter eggs with vague ideas in my head. The six colors of the eggs, and the fact that the eggs could be separated and the colors combined gave me the inspiration I needed. Ultimately, I  abandoned the Easter theme and adopted the color theme.

Colored Flow
The plastic eggs came in six colors and that became the central theme of the class format.  The six colors were each assigned to a different base move. Pink for jogs, purple for kicks, green for jacks, blue for skis, orange for tucks, and yellow for jumps.
If you are a relatively new instructor, you have probably wondered why we do the same base moves and their variations in every class. Seasoned instructors know why. The basic moves are the exercises that most effectively interact with the water’s resistance to provide results. A seasoned and educated instructor can identify the working muscles in all of the base moves. Constructing your classes from base moves makes them easier to teach and easier to follow. Every fitness class, land or water, has base moves. New instructors strive to invent new moves never before seen in the world of aquatic fitness. Seasoned instructors realize there really are no new moves. Instead, creativity comes from creating variations and combination of base moves. If an instructor is lucky, they can come up with a new base move variation or a combination. Hopefully I have pulled off a couple new base move variations/combinations in this video.
Below, I provide further insight into the Egg Splash video and then read on for an outline of the 45-minute class format and the props used.

Egg Splash: Class-at-a-Glance
This 45-minute aquatic fitness class format includes a warm-up, cool down and six exercise segments that are each 6 minutes long. Instructors can teach this class in both deep and shallow water. There is no additional equipment required, beyond a flotation belt if teaching this class in the deep end.
Warm-up:  Egg Hunt
The six base moves/colors are introduced, with an egg hunt-run between each one.
Exercise Segment 1:  Poached, Fried & Boiled
Each of the six base moves/colors is performed in a hard, harder, hardest progression. However, since we are using plastic Easter eggs as color props, we call it Poached, Fried & Boiled.
Exercise Segments 2 & 3:  Message in the Egg – Rounds 1and 2
One of the things I loved about using the plastic Easter eggs as a color prop, is that I could open the eggs and insert a message in them. Think fortune cookies!  The inserted message provided a challenging variation for each exercise/color. In this format, we do two rounds of “Message in the Egg,” for a total of 12 exercise challenges, each performed for 45 seconds each, followed by 15 seconds of rest.
Exercise Segments 3 & 4: Scrambled Eggs – Rounds 1 and 2
The other thing I loved about using plastic Easter eggs as a color prop was that the eggs could be separated and the colors combined by switching out tops and bottoms. I was even more enthused calling them Scrambled Eggs. Combining the colors created challenging combinations of base moves. In the video, we do 12 Scrambled Eggs, each performed for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of recovery.
Exercise Segment 5: Scrambled Finale
You know I love a good finale. This segment features all 12 Scrambled Eggs taught in a continuous sequence for 30 seconds each.
Cool Down: Eggs-over-Easy
The last segment features a combination of dynamic and static stretching for each of the base moves.

Colored Props
Once again, I used the plastic Easter eggs as a color prop because I loved inserting the messages in the eggs and swapping out the tops & bottoms to create color combos.
The plastic Easter eggs were ordered on Amazon, a package of 50 for under $10.00.
Purchase 50 Count Plastic Easter Eggs
The three Easter baskets were also purchased on Amazon for $35.00. But there are much cheaper options.

In the video, I also use my trusty magnetic chalk board, made popular in the two Alphabet workouts, to display magnetic colors that were purchased on Amazon for under $7.00.

If you are on a budget, consider simply using a poster board and six colored magic markers as your color prop.

I hope you enjoy teaching this color-themed workout and that your students enjoy all the colored challenges that come with it.
Wishing all a Happy Easter and a much anticipated Spring.
