Exploring Virtual Aquatic Personal Training

Sunday, February 20 2022

Fitmotivation will be adding personal training and rehab/recovery video categories in 2022 in order to help fitness professionals develop one-on-one and small group fitness programming.  We will be exploring different ways to present this content, but instructors will still be able to take away ideas for their regular classes.  Launching this new category, Jenni Lynn Patterson-LaCour shares S’WET PT, a virtual aquatic personal training routine she did with clients on Zoom during COVID lockdowns.

Pivoting Towards Virtual Water Fitness
Living in Manhattan, Jenni Lynn found herself at ground zero for COVID during Spring 2020.  Obviously, her aquatic fitness classes and personal training took a big hit when the pools closed.   Many of her class members and clients fled to Florida where the weather was warmer and they had access to pools.  Missing their S’WET Fitness classes, many reached out to Jenni Lynn and she sprang into action, devising a way to provide aquatic fitness coaching online.    At the time, many land instructors were having great success teaching their fitness classes online with Zoom.  Their students could follow along in the living room.  Water fitness instructors?  Not so much.  The logistics were much more difficult.  However, Jenni Lynn developed a way to record herself coaching simple but challenging combos that featured just four movements.  “I provided them descriptions of the exercises, along with recommended sets and reps via Zoom sessions that I recorded and sent to them,” says Jenni Lynn.  She encouraged her clients to embellish as they wished by adding more sets and reps or even equipment. S'WET PT is an example of a Zoom fitness routine that she shared with clients.   Watch Jenni Lynn provide more insight into the creation of S”WET PT.

How can instructors use this video?
Instructors can take away short sets of rep-based movement for their aqua classes or they can consider expanding their fitness horizons into virtual or "live" one-on-one training in the pool.  Jenni Lynn shares five sets of movement in S’WET PT, including a traveling warm-up, wall work, wave/drag exercises, strength and cardio.  Each of the sets includes four moves.  Coach Jenni Lynn recommends performing each of the exercises for 10 reps and then repeating the set three times.  These sets can easily be inserted into regular water fitness classes.  However, the method in which Jenni Lynn delivers the content to remote clients is definitely something fitness professionals may want to consider exploring.

Aquatic Personal Training & Rehab/Recovery Video Categories
Resources for one-on-one training in the water have been slow to come and hard to find.  Aquatic personal training is surprisingly not available in many fitness facilities that have pools.  In many instances, this is due to limitations in space and availability in busy recreational pools. However, personal training in the water could and should be considered in the thousands of smaller condo pools or for private residences.  There are lots of opportunities for fitness professionals who want to expand beyond classes and into individualized or small group training.  Moreover, now that virtual training is here to stay, Jenni Lynn’s brilliant efforts at training clients remotely adds a whole new layer of opportunity in this field.   For this reason, Fitmotivation will be adding personal training and rehab/recovery video categories in 2022 in order to help fitness professionals explore the possibilities and provide fitness formatting ideas.

S’WET PT and 15-Minute Core Conditioning are the last of the Fall 2021 inventory of videos to post.  After our winter hiatus, filming production has once again resumed here in Florida and with it comes all new videos with some new video leaders and of course some popular and regular content providers.  Fitmotivation extends a big thank you to Jenni Lynn for SWET PT and for sharing how she virtually trains clients in the pool.  We are excited to explore other ideas and formats for this type of training.  Speaking of excited, thanks to all who have completed the winter survey.  This has been big help as we wire frame an all new Fitmotivation streaming platform design.  Fitmotivation now has 280 vides and we think it deserves a “Netflix” style revamp.
