Older Adult Seated Exercise

Sit, Stand & Sculpt with Jenni Lynn Patterson-LaCour is a 50-minute chair class designed to improve core strength, muscular endurance and joint mobility. Aside from use in land fitness, if weather issues or a malfunctioning pool prevent you from teaching your aquatic fitness class, you can consider using this as a substitute low-impact workout.

This land-based workout features seated exercises that include the use of small hand weights and a rubberized resistance band.  In addition to gentle cardio and overall muscular endurance, core strength is a primary focus of this video. Strong core muscles can help your class members improve posture and more efficiently perform activities of daily living. Exercises from AEA’s Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP) were included to add some “movement medicine” to promote healthy joints. In some of the video segments, Jenni Lynn uses a small set of hand weights and a rubberized resistance band.  However, the equipment is optional. The movements can be modified without using extra resistance.  Rubberized resistance bands can be purchased cheaply on Amazon. Watch Jenni Lynn talk more about the workout and review an outline of the action below.
